When you are left in the care of your grandchild-whether for a few hours or for several days-you will probably be eager to make good use of your extensive parenting experience with your own children. But there may be some basic principles about child care that need refreshing. Although it is true that you raised healthy children in a safe environment, a lot has been done in recent years about child safety. Government agencies and medical authorities – such as the American Academy of Pediatrics – have developed a multitude of safety requirements, recommendations, and laws to protect the health and well-being of children and prevent them from being harmed. Consequently, many new products have been developed that facilitate, from the practical as well as the economic point of view, the fulfillment of the new security requirements for parents and grandparents.
Regardless of whether you care for your grandchild in your own home or in your own home, the following tips will help make the experience fun – and without incident – for everyone.
It is widely accepted that washing your hands thoroughly – especially after using the toilet and before preparing food or eating – is one of the main ways to prevent the spread of any disease, from flu to diarrhea. To eliminate harmful germs, wet your hands with warm water, then rub them with soap for at least 15 seconds (for the duration of the song “Happy Birthday”) and then rinse thoroughly. In public toilets, dry your hands with a disposable wipe, and use the same wipe to turn off the faucet. Teach your grandson this fundamental habit to contribute to the good health of the whole family. If you find it hard to convince your grandchild to wash your hands, try buying brightly colored soaps, funny shapes, or pleasant smells. Or ask her to sing her favorite song while washing her hands.
Know what medications you can and can not give your grandchild in case of illness. If you have any questions, call your child’s pediatrician before giving any over-the-counter medication. Also, aspirin should never be given to children 12 years of age or younger, as aspirin is linked to Reye’s syndrome, a serious illness that occurs with nausea, vomiting, and changes in behavior and usually requires hospital treatment . Also, never give a child any medication that has been prescribed for another person, be it an adult or a child. Even if two people have the same disease, they may need different drugs at different doses.
